R Kelly Smiles for Tavis

The Twitterati/Internet/blogsphere’s been buzzing for the past few weeks over the news that Tavis Smiley’s SmileyBooks is set to publish R. Kelly’s memoirs next year. By my estimation, the reaction is on point. So much so, that I scrapped plans to blog in-depth about it because others have made my points, like:

Chasing Pavement

I’m back in the Philadelphia area, battling a cold and trying to wrap my arms around everything that’s on my plate. My holiday was great – I spent two weeks in Charleston incognito because my plan was to get ahead of everything that’s coming up. But, of course, things don’t always go as planned. I received [...]

The Closest Thing To Heaven

I received word this morning that Brian Rhinehardt, one of our authors, passed away last night. The news is unexpected and tragic, and my mind is reeling over the loss of a writer that I was looking forward to publishing  and traveling with in the new year.
Brian first queried my company in August 2008 about The [...]

Plenary Publishing: The Year In Review

When we sent out our 2008 press release announcing the call for submissions, we never expected to get the response that we did: thousands of submissions from talented writers all over the country – and a few international places. It was so overwhelming (in a good way, of course) that we’re still finishing up our review of submissions [...]

In the past six months, I’ve been knee deep in a major trial [...]

What Takes You Guys So Long?? Dang.

This month has been crazy busy for us. We’re wearing all kinds of hats right now: baseball caps, church hats, pageboy caps, etc., as we move closer to publishing our frontlist.
Now that we’ve selected our authors for 2010, we’re in the midst of the early stages of editing, continuing to read initial submissions, pouring through full manuscripts, shaping [...]

We’re negotiating with one more author for September 2010, and with the release of my own work, [...]

BEA Recap – Pt. II

This morning’s news coverage provides great coverage of BEA and the challenges facing the publishing industry.
Washington Post: At Publisher’s Convention, Is the Writing on The Wall?
“I think the publishing industry will have to change, but it’s still a viable industry . . . Whereas bookselling — nah. In 20 years, there won’t be bookstores. Science fiction [...]
